Hustle and Flow Black People Rejoice! We Got A Good Movie! by: Reggie Eggert, for Entertainment Whoop-that-trick! Get 'em! Whoop-that-trick! Get 'em! Whoop-that-trick! Get 'em! Whoop-that-trick! Get 'em! Whoop-that-trick! Get 'em! And so goes the infectious, crunktacular mantra of the first single from low-level pimp/drug-dealer D-Jay, played by an inspired Terrence Howard, in writer-director Gary Brewer's stunning piece of work Hustle and Flow. Standing alone, out of context, those words quite possibly seem crude and worthless to the average person reading this review. But, seeing the words slowly and awkwardly birthed during a recording session, then repeatedly and powerfully explode from perpetually frustrated D-Jay's mouth, backed by ominous synth chords and a hypnotic beat, it conveys D-Jay's desperation, hope, pain, fear, strength and triumph. It's one of the most truly memorable scenes I've witnessed in years...maybe as far back as the medal ceremony in Best of the Best. Howard's portrayal of D-Jay is utterly unimpeachable. He is probably going to be nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. Never again will I look at this man onscreen and think, "Man, this muhfucka was in Glitter. What was he thinking?" Like Mariah Carey, his talent was strong enough to free him from the of pull of that cinematic black hole. When you can make people forget a piece of shit and comeback strong, you're a star. Da Brat, this doesn't apply to you. You're just LisaRaye's little sister. Damn, that's approaching a level of wackness only attained by Memphis Bleek and Tara Reid. Falsely accused rapist Anthony Anderson, the saving grace of Kangaroo Jack, is a revelation as D-Jay's strait-laced childhood friend Key. Key provides D-Jay with the technical recording and producing skills to make his dreams of becoming a rap star come true. Fans of Anderson, like myself, will feel vindicated after watching him hold his own in scenes with an actor of Howard's caliber. If any of you hating ass bitches actually think King's Ransom, Malibu's Most Wanted and My Baby Daddy are accurate representations of this man's talent, you will feel as stupid as Pam Anderson at a Mensa meeting for gay men after seeing this film. You were wrong! BE MAD! I'd also like to address the film's treatment of its female characters, particularly the black females, because I know there will be some complaints. Let me just say to these people who will voice their grievances: This is a movie about a PIMP that is trying to become a RAPPER. Again: PIMP...RAPPER. PIMP RAPPER! Now, if you still go see this movie and come out complaining about the portrayal of women in it, I will find you. I swear it. I will find you and I will punch you in the damn stomach and all about the face and neck. Besides, the brilliant performances of Taraji P. Henson, Taryn Manning and Paula Jai Parker as D-Jay's stable of hoes should not be discredited, resented or regretted. These talented women deserve better than that. Go save some other hoes, you bastards. Black women survived 400 years of unspeakable degradation and Oprah and crew are doing just fucking dandy. They don't need you sanctimonious attention-seekers spreading shame about them getting paid well for doing what their hearts desire. You're the assholes who should be ashamed. SHAME ON YOU! Hustle and Flow, y'all. It's the best movie I've seen all year. Note: You know it's hard out here for a piiiimp.
