Let's
get the obvious comparison out of the way: Shopgirl isn't
as good as Lost in Translation. Although much more accessible
than Translation, the characters in Shopgirl
are mere generalizations, while those in Translation,
plausibly human.
Other than that, I liked Shopgirl a whole lot. Steve
Martin did a great job in translating his Novella in a major motion
picture. The best part of the movie is Claire Danes as the title
character. She plays Mirabelle Buttersfield, a bored but talented
artist who pays the rent by working behind the expensive glove
counter at
Saks
Fifth Avenue. Danes proves once again that she's one of the three
or four best actresses of her generation. She consistently gives
her characters a vulnerability and sincerity that very few of
her peers are able to provide. And she even made me believe she
wasn't grossed out by the idea of fucking Steve Martin. Most girls
her age would be horrified and you'd be able to tell (See Gwyneth
Paltrow and Michael Douglas; Drew Barrymore and Tom Skerrit).
Not Claire. She can act.
Mirabelle is torn between two men who are polar opposites. Jeremy,
played by the excessively hairy and funny Jason Schwartzman, is
a slacker and a slob, but still manages to be likable. Martin's
Ray Porter is a refined multi-millionaire who can give her anything
she wants, except his heart (awww). So, obviously, the bitch chooses
the guy with all the money. He takes her shopping and pays off
all of her student loans. I know what you're thinking. "What
a whore." Well, I thought that too until I realized she really
loved the guy and she never actually asked him for anything. You
can't hate on that.
The plot becomes a bit convoluted when Jeremy runs off to tour
with a rock band for a year and subsequently experiences exponential
growth emotionally and intellectually through the use of self-help
books-on-tape. Only in the movies and the Church of Scientology
do people change so completely so quickly. The guy is actually
gone for a good portion of the movie and comes back trying to
win her heart? I just didn't get it. They didn't even talk for
a year.
If you wanna see Claire Danes naked, go see this move. If not...don't.
