Maybe this movie caught me at the wrong time, because I usually have no problem with 'hood movies. But, I just wasn't feeling this one. It looked like it was all thrown together at the last minute, and the fact that the kid who plays Tyrese's son, H. Hunter Hall, is the real-life son of director Vondie Curtis-Hall is all the evidence I need to justify my claim. He's not quite Sofia Coppola in Godfather III, but lil' man can't act, bless his heart. On a related note, Hall's mother and Curtis-Hall's wife, Kasi Lemmons, furthur erodes her post-Eve's Bayou credibility by taking a part as Angry Black Woman. I shit you not, she's credited as "Angry Black Woman." Can Kasi and Vondie make their need for a big payday any clearer? The one person who comes out of this movie unscathed in Meagan Goode. She's clearly the most talented and intelligent young black actress in the game. Since bursting on the scene in Eve's Bayou, Goode has shown the range that very few young actresses possess. She can do comedy (The Cookout, Roll Bounce), drama (Brick, Eve's Bayou), action (Ride or Die, Biker Boyz), as well as weird shit (again, Brick). In this film, she pulls off the first three with equal skill, but it's her comedic side that's particularly impressive during the bank robbery scenes. As she distracts the bank employees and customers, Goode delivers some laughs with an over-the-top, indignant outburst about being unable to cash a $1 million sweepstakes check, then follows it up with a wig-wearing seizure in the very next scene. I can't explain why, but I found myself laughing at that shit. While Goode is great, this movie is not. Far from it, in fact. Save your ten bucks for the DVD. I can't hate on Curtis-Hall for collecting a check with this one, but he seriously needs to think twice about doing something like this again. He's too intelligent for this kind of bullshit. Vondie, I hope you're taking the money you made off this and rewarding your fans with a self-financed story of some intelligent, normal, middle-class black folks. Speaking for myself, I think I deserve it after sitting through this shit.
